The 19-year-old Mason is an ambitious blue-chip prospect who has dedicated himself to the sport of boxing. His intent is to constantly work hard, stay locked in, and grow both inside and outside of the ring.
Abdullah Mason is laser focused and his goal is to continue to hone his skills. He is a disciplined well-rounded boxer who most members of the boxing community believe is the future of the lightweight division.
Back in November 2021, the Ohio native Abdullah Mason made his pro boxing debut at the age of 17. It was a short night of work for Mason as he stopped Jaylan Phillips in the second round.
Mason would go on to win his next nine fights. He was very active in 2023, as he fought a total of five times.
In his fifth bout of the calendar year, Mason faced 23-year-old Jose Cardenas. With 1:16 remaining in the opening round, the southpaw Abdullah Mason landed a left-hand shot that sent Cardenas down to the canvas.
Cardenas was able to get up and survive the opening round, but he wouldn’t be so fortunate in the second round when Mason threw a throw-away right hook followed by a straight left hand that connected and floored Cardenas for the second time in the bout.
As Cardenas landed flat on his back, the referee proceeded to immediately put a halt to the contest.
Now Abdullah Mason (11-0, 9 KOs) is ready to continue his boxing journey. Mason is a young, talented fighter who is mature beyond his years. In addition to being poised, Mason is a fighter who has a strong jab, he’s accurate, has exceptional timing, and he’s a good counter puncher.
Mason wears a t-shirt with the words ‘Appetite for Smoke’ written across the front of the shirt. The phrase simply means that Mason is ready for all the top prospects. Before he crosses paths with the other top prospects, he must first take care of business on Thursday night.
Mason’s opponent the 31-year-old Ben Gurment, is an undefeated fighter, but he has experienced multiple close calls. Through eleven fights Gurment has been able to maintain the 0 in the loss column, but he has fought to a draw on three separate occasions.
The Fort Worth, Texas native is anxious to step inside the ring on Thursday night due to the fact that he feels as though a win against a Top Rank prospect such as Abdullah Mason will give his career a big boost.
Gurment believes a victory will elevate him from prospect to top prospect or contender status.
On Thursday night live on ESPN, rising star Abdullah Mason will have his opportunity to shine under the bright lights in Las Vegas.
Mason is a humble boxer who believes in the old adage that action speaks louder than words, and on Thursday night he’s confident that he will give the fans a great performance.
