Eddie Hearn Believes This Could Be The End For John Ryder

Promoter Eddie Hearn is unsure what the future holds for John Ryder.

Ryder suffered a ninth-round TKO loss to Jamie Munguia, which was his second straight defeat. At age 35, Hearn wonders if Saturday night was the last time that the Brit stepped into the boxing ring.

“I think it’s always difficult straight after a fight,” Hearn said (via BoxingScene). “But I think having reached the heights that he’s reached, particularly the Canelo Alvarez fight and the Jaime Munguia fight, I think there is a chance that could be the end of the road for him. You know, we really believed he could win tonight. He really believed he [could win] as well.”

Entering the fight, Munguia was a sizeable betting favorite, and early on he had some success. Munguia dropped Ryder in the second and fourth rounds, before dropping him twice in the ninth to stop the fight.

Eddie Hearn believes the bad start was too much to overcome for John Ryder.

“I think, you know, the start was a bit of a nightmare,” Hearn said. “The fourth round wasn’t really a knockdown, but you had to score it a knockdown. And obviously, having two knockdowns in the first four rounds was very difficult for him. But beaten by the younger, fresher man. So, a decision to make, for sure.”

With the loss, John Ryder dropped to 32-7 as a pro and before the back-to-back losses to Munguia and Canelo Alvarez he was on a four-fight winning streak.

If this is it for Ryder, he will end his career having been the former IBF international super-middleweight champion, WBA intentional middleweight champion, and also challenged for the undisputed titles in two weight classes.

Do you think John Ryder will retire after his loss to Jamie Munguia?
