Alex Pereira is the new UFC light heavyweight champion of the world after finishing Jiří Procházka at UFC 295.

But, it didn’t come to fruition without a hint of controversy.

Pereira and Procházka battled for the vacant UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 295 on Saturday in New York City. They fought for the belt that was vacated by Jamahal Hill due to injury.

A back-and-forth first round featured a slew of blistering low kicks from Pereira and a big takedown for Procházka. For the second half of the first, Procházka was able to control Pereira on the ground before Pereira got back to his feet with seconds left.

In the second round, Pereira caught Procházka with a left uppercut to Procházka’s forehead that sent the former champion collapsing to the mat. Procházka was able to work back up to his feet but suffered from a storm of elbow strikes that appeared to knock him unconscious.

Referee Marc Goddard stepped in as it appeared that Procházka went limp, but Procházka quickly protested the stoppage. UFC analysts Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier both called the stoppage premature.

The UFC’s Light Heavyweight Division Has A New Titleholder

Here’s what UFC fighters had to say about the UFC 295 main event.

Pereira’s UFC light heavyweight title win came just months after his divisional debut at UFC 291. He defeated Jan Blachowicz by split decision after making the full-time move to 205lbs.

Pereira becomes the ninth two-division world champion in UFC history after defeating Procházka. Most astounding is the fact that Pereira is just 11 fights into his MMA run after a decorated career in Glory Kickboxing.

Pereira called out his four-time combat sports rival, Israel Adesanya, after his light heavyweight win at UFC 295. He’ll look to bring stability and clarity to the light heavyweight division.
