Terri Harper is set to face the former pound-for-pound champion Cecilia Braekhus for the WBA and WBO Super-Welterweight World Titles. They’ll be sharing the spotlight on the undercard of the fight between Leigh Wood and Josh Warrington at Utilita Arena Sheffield on Saturday, October 7, available live worldwide on DAZN.
Remember, this fight was initially planned to take place during the historic Katie Taylor vs. Chantelle Cameron showdown at the 3Arena in Dublin. Unfortunately, Braekhus had to bow out due to an unforeseen illness, forcing a postponement.
Harper, the former WBC and IBO Super-Featherweight World Champion, carries an impressive record of 13-1-1 with 6 KOs. She seized the WBA 154lbs World Title with a resounding victory over Scotland’s Hannah Rankin in her first Super-Welterweight fight last year.
Braekhus, the Norwegian boxing icon, also known as the ‘First Lady’ of women’s boxing, is on a mission to claim her title in a second weight class. With a record of 37-2 and 9 KOs, she reigned as an undisputed champion at 147lbs, holding multiple World Titles from 2009 to 2020. Jessica McCaskill, in August 2020 and March 2021, delivered the only professional losses to Braekhus.
“I’m excited and grateful to everyone for making this fight happen again,” Harper shared. “Looking back, this experience has made me a stronger fighter with even more experience now gained.”
She speaks highly of her rival, labeling Braekhus as an “icon of the sport.” Harper views this fight as a stepping stone towards her ultimate goal – becoming undisputed in her weight class.
Harper also hinted at her elation to fight in front of her home crowd, “I’ve had a great following from the beginning of my career.”
To put it in Harper’s words, “I won my first World Title at Sheffield Arena and then lost them there. Now, it’s time to become a unified World Champion at the same arena.”
Echoing her anticipation, Eddie Hearn, Chairman of Matchroom Sport, is thrilled to announce this high-octane fight. In his words, “Terri Harper gets the biggest fight of her life as she makes the first defence of her WBA Super-Welterweight World Title against former pound-for-pound No.1 and undisputed Welterweight ruler Cecilia Braekhus.”
