The main event of UFC Sao Paulo wasn’t exactly the most entertaining bout ever.

UFC Sao Paulo went down over the weekend. The main event saw surging contender Jailton Almeida secure the most significant victory of his burgeoning career when he got the unanimous decision nod against former heavyweight title challenger Derrick Lewis.

However, during the fight, Almeida chose the wrestling path en route to his dominant victory. It wasn’t the most aggressive that we’ve seen ‘Malhadinho’ in the octagon. Despite having multiple dominant grounded positions, Almeida didn’t really empty the gas tank on the attack and seemed content to ride out the decision victory against the explosive Lewis.

Former UFC Middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has faced every type of fighter that’s out there. For that reason, ‘The Reaper’ may have more valuable insight than anyone on why the Brazilian contender displayed the strategy that he did during his unanimous decision victory over Derrick Lewis in the UFC Sao Paulo main event

Robert Whittaker Believes Jailton Almeida Wanted to Preserve Energy Against Derrick Lewis

Speaking on the MMArcade Podcast, Whittaker explained why he believes Jailton Almeida wasn’t the most active whilst in dominant positions against Derrick Lewis, despite having over 20 minutes of control time. He also weighed in on why the referee didn’t stand them up – and correctly so.

‘I don’t know why [Jailton] Almeida wasn’t doing more on top. Maybe he was trying to preserve his energy, because let’s not forget, these are 265-pound guys, these are massive dudes, just units of men, right?!

To wrestle the way Almeida was doing it drains a lot of energy resources. But still, he wasn’t throwing a lot of elbows, he wasn’t really trying to get a lot of significant shots. If you look at the striking number, it is pretty full on. There was a lot of shots landed and [Derrick] Lewis spending 21 minutes on the ground, he didn’t land that many, right?

But the referee, I agree, what do you do in a fight like that? A referee cannot stand up a grounded fighter when the guy has an advantageous position like a half guard or a mount, you can’t! If you get held down for 25 minutes and you can’t get back up, dude…you can’t say you’ve lost but you certainly haven’t won, ya know?!”
