Shakur Stevenson Admits He Had A Bad Performance Against Edwin De Los Santos

Shakur Stevenson knows his performance on Thursday night was not his best and he says it was due to him being sick.

Stevenson was facing Edwin De Los Santos as the American looked to claim a title in his third different weight class. Stevenson entered the fight as a massive favorite and had said that he was going to stop De Los Santos.

However, the fight was very competitive and it was Shakur Stevenson who eeked out a decision with the judges scoring the fight 116-112, 115-113, and 116-112. Neither fighter reached double-digit punches land in any round, and after the win, Stevenson said he was not feeling well which contributed to the bad performance.

“I had a bad performance tonight,” said Stevenson (h/t ESPN). “That’s all I’m really focused on. I wasn’t feeling too good, so I’ll live with it. It’s OK… I didn’t feel good before the fight. Honestly, I had already told myself that if I feel like this in the ring and if it’s not going well, I’m going to make sure that I box and get the victory.”

The most important thing for Shakur Stevenson is that he still got his hand raised and became the WBC lightweight champion.

However, in the fight, Stevenson rarely threw his left hand and when asked if he injured it, the American didn’t want any excuses or to talk about it.

“I don’t got nothing to say about that,” he said. “I don’t make excuses. It happens. We go through a lot as fighters.”

With the win over Edwin De Los Santos on Thursday, Shakur Stevenson is now 21-0 as a pro and the WBC lightweight champion. In his career, he has notable wins over Shuichiro Yoshino, Robson Conceicao, Oscar Valdez, and Jamel Herring among others.
