Teofimo Lopez Sr. Wants Crawford Next

Trainer Teofimo Lopez Sr. is targeting unified welterweight champion Terence Crawford to face his son, Teo, after his win over Jamaine Ortiz last Thursday night.

Lopez Sr. believes Crawford (40-0, 31 KOs) will be there to be hit, and with Teofimo’s power, he’ll win. It’s unrealistic for Teofimo Sr. to continue to bang the drum for a fight with Crawford because whatever chance there was went out the window last night.

Let’s hope there isn’t a similar outcome to Teofimo’s successful title defense of his WBO light welterweight belt against Jamaine Ortiz last Thursday night. With scoring like that, Crawford doesn’t stand a chance of winning a decision against Teofimo.

Lopez Sr. says wants Jamaine out of the sport because of the movement that he used in their fight. He feels that he doesn’t belong in boxing fighting the way he did. Jamaine was making Teofimo miss and hitting him with combinations, making him look bad.

“Of course, we want to see that fight. A lot of people are going to say he’s not ready,” said Lopez Sr. to Fight Hub TV when asked if he wants Terence Crawford for Teofimo. “Terence boxes you; he comes forward. He’s going to get open. He’s going to give us angles where we can hit him.”

Even if Crawford were to agree to fight Teofimo, it would be a tough sell on PPV because Teo hurt his popularity, such as it is, with his performance against Ortiz last night. Fans still haven’t gotten over how bad Teofimo looked against Sandor Martin and George Kambosos Jr.

“Right now, with the power my son has got, it’s going to be hard to beat him. I think we’re going to be winning a lot of weight divisions. He gets better with bigger guys, and I think we’ll do really good with Terence. He could beat him.

“At least he’s taking the chance, and why not? He’s the undisputed world champion at 140 because we beat Josh Taylor; he had all the belts. He never lost them,” said Lopez Sr., embellishing Teofimo’s credentials. So, that would be a good guy [Crawford] to have on your resume.

“Sure, we’re open to any negotiations. Let’s see what happens,” said Teofimo Sr. when asked if he’d like to make a fight between Teofimo and Ryan Garcia.
