A year on from his championship crowning, Islam Makhachev will return to Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena for the second defense of his lightweight title.

While that was originally slated to come in the form of a rematch against the man he faced in the UAE last October, Charles Oliveira, the Brazilian’s late withdrawal has paved the way for featherweight kingpin Alexander Volkanovski to receive a second shot at two-division glory.

A late alteration was also required in the co-headliner courtesy of an infection suffered by Paulo Costa. As a result, the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev will instead share the cage with ex-welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. Both men will be targeting a performance that cements a shot at middleweight titleholder Sean Strickland next time out.

Ahead of the event, 24 out of the 26 fighters successfully made weight, with strawweight fighter Victoria Dudakova and lightweight Mike Breeden marking the two failures on the scale.

Nevertheless, every fight is intact, and all that remained on Friday was for the athletes to face off one final time at the UFC 294 ceremonial weigh-ins!
