Undefeated middleweight contender Khamzat Chimaev has had confirmation of the injury he sustained at UFC 294 earlier this month.
In the co-main event of the Abu Dhabi-held pay-per-view event, Chimaev returned to 185 pounds over a year on from a weight debacle in Las Vegas. In the formerly ranked 170lber’s way of a place in a different title picture was Kamaru Usman.
Following back-to-back losses to Leon Edwards, the ex-welterweight champion answered the short-notice call for a debut at the higher weight in pursuit of a first opportunity at two-division glory.
Unfortunately for “The Nigerian Nightmare,” his valiant effort at the Etihad Arena ultimately wasn’t enough, with two scorecards securing a majority decision victory for “Borz.”
But the Chechen-born UAE representative certainly didn’t escape unscathed.
Chimaev Avoids Break & Surgery Post-UFC 294
Post-fight, Chimaev revealed fears regarding a hand injury he suffered in the very first round, telling his team that he believed it to have been broken.
A couple of weeks on, an update has been provided on the health issue, and it’s certainly good news for those wishing to see “Borz” challenge for Sean Strickland’s title next.
Chimaev’s manager, Majdi Shammas, told ESPN that his man avoided a break at UFC 294, instead tearing a ligament. The injury is not expected to require surgery and will see the middleweight contender wear a brace for four weeks before another assessment.
While a timeline for his return wasn’t provided, the news would appear to boost Chimaev’s chances of cashing in on the number one contender status that he seemingly earned at the expense of Usman on October 21.
@SStricklandMMA you are next don’t worry you know haw fast I can finish you 🤝🤣🦾
